Quick Fix Repair Passat Door Handle?

  • #1

In the issue that whatsoever others struggle with the poor estrus (lukewarm) issue:

Symptoms: foam pieces blowing out of the vents
Trouble: The blend doors have lost their foam backing

Notation: i found that it wasn't necessary to remove the dash or HVAC.

ane. Remove the center console which surrounds the shifter
2. Drop the knee joint bar downwardly which runs the entire width of the car (ii screws at either end)
3. Remove the stereo and get a screwdriver in at that place to release ii clips that hold the HVAC front end encompass on. By releasing them, it volition begin to split.
iv. On the bottom of the exposed HVAC (roughly in back of where the storage bin was on the console), take out the lower commodities
five. Put a wire tie in through that exposed hole (where the commodities came out) and sure-fire the HVAC cover back towards the seats, exposing the compartment where both alloy doors are.
6. Using a mirror and light, notice how many of the holes in the doors accept lost some or all their foam.
7. Using sticky back felt (88 cents per canvas at Walmart), cut to size and apply to each door. NOTE: you tin adjust the doors by using the control knobs. One adjust the forward (closest to engine) door with the Ac-Heat control. The other adjusts with the air choice knob (vent, floor, defrost, etc).

I was able to get my entire hand in there. Subsequently ruining a couple of pieces of felt due to information technology sticking to random things, I was able to get it repaired.

Car heats wonderful now.

Thanks to anybody for their help

This is a great process. Worked well on my 97 Passat. One note on the Passat. In that location was no demand to remove the radio. The clips were accessable with the front end console removed.

Thanks!!!!! It's supposed to be decent weather here this weekend, and then a proficient time to try. Do you think the HVAC foil tape would piece of work as well? Maybe I'll take hold of both on my trip to store this morning time.

I needed to remove the emergency brake boot, and 2 screws that hold the console in rear seat area also. I recommend using nix tie to cinch the embrace back,so cut the actress pc off flush-I figured a wire might poke my peel or eye when I looked into the alloy door-I was able to peer into the box w/ light-both doors were cleaned of foam:rolleyes:..... I tried to use the HVAC tape-but that didn't work too well.I then bankrupt open the five pack of adhesive felt sheets-didn't even have to apply a whole sheet..... I cut a pc. iii"x7" -that fit the first door pretty expert,so I test fit information technology on the inner door-seemed to be ok,so pulled back out and peeled the paper of back-took a couple tries, just eventually got it on inner door-probably could accept been cut another ane/8"-ane/4" wider, but all holes were covered.Outset door was piece of cake. Couldn't tell what was causing the heat control door to bind-ended up not working w/ knob,so I rigged a wire west/ loop over arm on bottom(cable popped off of bottom)-cinched it a footling w/ needle olfactory organ vise grips, then ran the wire into rider side a little, then twisted a loop. Now the cold/hot is hand control:p.Got information technology back together, only oasis't tried information technology yet-demand to do a couple more than things to car,so I left information technology in garage.I will mail back.....

Worked slap-up!!! This was an easy fix. I'll accept heat when I head north side by side week.

I'm curious if the blend door fix had a positive touch on your A/C temps also. I'm thinking that it should amend both since the temp door either blocks off the heater cadre or sends air through it.

I forgot to try it Tuesday when temps got warm, merely my A/C temps seemed ok this by summer.

If I tin can follow these directions information technology will be a great load off my mind, wasn't looking forward to the whole dash removal!

Ane matter, is the adhesive on the felt pads supposed to resist the hot air in there? The heater in my A3 could make the air nigh too hot for the skin, just wondering if it will retain its integrity, or melt? I'g hopeful! Then is the final consensus the felt pads from Walmart will work likewise every bit anything, in this particular state of affairs?

Time volition tell on the adhesive-just I have four more felt sheets if it doesn't hold up. I tried to put the HVAC foil record in there, only it stuck together when I tried to place it within. I guess I could've tried some smaller strips:eek:-

I started this job today on "I-Red" and took some pics that I'll post here in this thread for others to run across.

Later y'all remove the center console and human knee-bar you tin see the spiral and prune. (marked red)

And the Commuter-side clip

And the clips slide outward from the eye

When you pull the cover from the bottom, you lot can see the manner door (three holes)

Unfortunately, the infinite y'all run across hither is about all you get to work with. I removed the four 8mm bolts (2 each side) from the upper dash to permit the comprehend to be tweeked open a smidge more. A helper to pull upwardly/rearward on the lower centre dash gave me enough to get my mitt/arm into the heater blend door.

There's not a real proficient way to get a pic of the blend door so I snapped the pic below by sticking the camera into the access area. Yous tin can wait at information technology with a flashlight, but the repair is done kind of blindly past hand /feel.

This is going on the to-do listing for the B4. Heat is pretty good but I do have to shut the dash vents off manually.

I did this final dark on the B4V I'm selling and have to say "Thanks" to the original poster who came up with the thought. Information technology took me iii hours from start to stop, including buttoning up the interior.

I originally was going to use the two" broad rut acceptable foam, but based on Mcgink's post, decided to go with the one-piece cream. I backed information technology with the metal record, since that stuff is tenacious, by sticking the foam to the back of the tape so the record would attach to the door. So I covered the exterior seams with it, and then if it did separate, it wouldn't go anywhere. It was not equally easy as information technology looks since when the silver aluminum tape touches annihilation, it's attached.

Information technology's not pretty, but is very functional and won't be seen anyway.

I did need to remove the radio, which allowed the dash to come upwards a little more, but not enough to see while your mitt is in at that place attaching the foam.

This was the mode door and the alloy door, which is why it had no heat.

And here is the terminal product. I added holes in the mode door so information technology would all the same provide heat/air to other areas despite the option. I believe this is why the original cream was porous, and using a non-porous foam would cease that effect. The holes I added were a guess, and they are a little larger than they could have been, but the outcome is nice. When I want to close downwards all estrus to the dash, I but shut the dash vents manually. It'south not a trouble or annoying, just more menstruum than I expected.

When you get done, I HIGHLY recommend vaccuming out the debris you see in the bottom picture. If you lot don't, you volition be covered in information technology when you turn on the fan. Lesson learned.

^ Thanks for posting and including the pictures. I need to do this to my A4 Jetta. I am going to cover completely with metallic record and cream equally you did. Where did yous go the ane piece foam from?

  • #19

First of all thank you to all that contributed to this write up. Just did mine last dark and the heat will once over again melt your peel. I didn't remove the radio and had just enough room. Removing the four bolts(ii on each end of the dash) really helped. I used HVAC tape. Cut into 3-four" pieces and started sticking it on. The smaller pieces made it easier to identify more than precisely. You lot can go both horizontally and vertically. I as well taped up the lower part of the heater box(from simply beneath the clip on the drivers side to the fastener spiral on the bottom) later I put it dorsum together considering the cream seal was deteriorated and was losing a lot of air menstruation there. Had and so much fun I told my friend I would practice his this weekend. Took simply under 4 hours start to finish. Make sure you lot go all three rows(3 vertical rows) on the blend door. The row under the silver record in Abacus pictures was hard for me too meet, kind of wrapped around the corner. Also, I read an update in another thread by Abacus - DO NOT cut the holes in the fashion door felt. Thanks again to all.

And then I may be interpreting this wrong, simply it sounds like in that location take been a couple different types of cream people have used? Tin can somebody give a link/pic of what they think is the best choice?

Also, does anybody have whatever long term positive/negative feedback on the foam they used (how well it'south holding upwardly)?

I'm thinking virtually tackling this some time soon since I've had a decent corporeality of foam coming out my vents on the B4 I picked up this year.

Is it possible to use a material that could be glued on to door? I am thinking spray or use glue to door or cloth then put felt or whatsoever into place past sliding or positioning material into place. I was having an engine temp issue that was resolved with a new thermostat. I was all excited that I would now have cabin estrus merely to my surprise it was not enough heat for the 39 deg. morning drive to work. I can safely assume I have the aforementioned issue with the blend door. I was getting foam fragments blowing out of vents early after purchasing the motorcar. I besides take to manually close vents when in defrost mode. Anyhow looks similar I will be tackling this also.

Unless y'all're hell-bent on making information technology like stock, you don't have to use any kind of foam on the alloy doors. The cream is there so a minimum of fresh air flow circulates in the machine when the HVAC is shut off.

Employ duct record, plumbers heavy foil record, whatever works.

:)

Accept them off and weld up the holes. Problem solved...permanently.
